The afternoon affair in Kerry Park was looking like a solid tilt. The Islanders are one of only two teams to beat the Cougars this year. And it was at home in their last meeting on October 16th. The Cougars did not play at their best in that game, no one on the Cougars team will deny that. Today, however, they did play well.
Jackson Estey was the outright leader for the Cougars in goals coming into this game with 16. 5 up on 2nd place Ben Brant. Brant closed that lead by one in the early going of the contest when he burst across the Islanders line and ripped a shot over the blocker of Demelo. 2 minutes later Logan Walker tied the game up and we looked to have a good game brewing. Unfortunately for the Islanders they did not get the momentum shift they were hoping for.
Estey would score 2 and a half minutes later, then again early in the 2nd period. Nathan Bouveur would extend the lead in the waning seconds of the middle period. Less than a minute into the 3rd Estey would grab the Hatty and he would round out the night with his 4th goal of the game at the 6:51 mark of the 3rd. Estey flirted with the top spot for goals in the entire league, but with both Riley Braun and Cameron De Boer in action today as well, it may be short lived. It is turning into a hot race, though.
This game was a penalty filled affair that will likely see several suspensions, possibly from both teams. Just to add to the extensive list of suspensions handed down this year. Total games suspended is not a stat i keep track of, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this season is a record holder for the league.
Cougars are back at it Wednesday against the Wolves. 7pm at the Q Centre.
