Cougars Capture VIJHL Championship with Game 5 Shutout

The Victoria Cougars are VIJHL Champions.

Backed by a dominant performance from goaltender Finn Wilson, the Cougars defeated the Nanaimo Buccaneers 2-0 on Thursday night at Archie Browning Arena to secure the Brent Patterson Memorial Trophy and cap off a remarkable playoff run.

Wilson delivered a championship-clinching performance, stopping all 39 shots he faced to record his second consecutive shutout. Over the final four games of the series, the Cougars netminder was nearly unbeatable—allowing just three goals on 152 shots for an incredible .980 save percentage.

At the other end, Nanaimo’s Tanner Ferrill was equally impressive, turning aside 28 shots and earning third star honours.

Grady Sluggett opened the scoring in the first period with a highlight-reel effort, weaving through defenders before deking the Buccaneers’ goaltender to give Victoria the early lead. The Cougars carried that momentum throughout the game, staying composed defensively while limiting high-quality chances.

Ben Wetterberg sealed the victory in the third period, finishing off a play set up by Simon Semancik—who picked up assists on both Cougars goals.

With the win, Victoria claims the VIJHL Playoff Championship in five games, taking the series 4-1. It marks the franchise’s first Brent Patterson Memorial Trophy since 2019 and the ninth playoff championship in team history.

This championship run comes in the Cougars’ first season under new ownership led by Philip Pang and Chris Lynn, alongside head coach Mike Vandekamp.

Victoria’s path to the title was anything but easy. The Cougars opened the playoffs with a 4-1 series victory over the Westshore Wolves before battling past the defending champion Peninsula Panthers in a thrilling seven-game South Division Final.

From start to finish, the 2026 playoff run showcased resilience, depth, and elite goaltending—hallmarks of a championship team.

The Victoria Cougars are back on top of the VIJHL.
