The Cougars and Storm played a game on a Sunday afternoon that should have been played November 24th. But due to the Storm being severally depleted with injuries they couldn’t ice a team. So it was either forfeit, or reschedule. Head Coach Brody Coulter said he would rather lose a hard fought game than win by forfeit. So today’s game was just that.
The first period was dominated by the Storm for the first 5 or 6 minutes. It looked like the Cougars forgot the game started with Campbell River skating circles around them. The Cougars would settle into the game as the period wore on but had a hard time getting the offence clicking. The Storm blocked about 10 shot attempts in the 1st alone. It was the Storm who would take the lead first, goals from Quinn Messer and Tynan Peacock had them up 2-0 late in the period. But former Storm player, Davis Frank, would get one back with about 90 seconds to go. Storm lead 2-1 after 1, but the Cougars were out-shooting them 8-6.
The 2nd period was very frantic. It felt very much like a late series play-off game. Chances left and right, both goalies on fire, and bodies flying everywhere. Esposito would get the only goal of the 2nd early on, but the middle frame had about 15 scoring chances. It was 2-2 going into the 3rd, but could have easily been 5-5.
The Storm were on their third game in three nights. Unfortunately, it looked like they ran into a bit of a wall in the final frame and the Cougars pounced on their chances. Spencer Golden would play the hero scoring twice to give the Cougars the lead in the 3rd. Then late in the period Aaron de Kok was on the bench with the Storm pressing. Zach Guerra intercepted a pass at the blue line and skated into the Storm end for the empty net goal. 30 seconds later the Cougars grabbed another one with de Kok back in the net. 6-2 would be the final. This was one of the most exciting games of the season thus far, and really showed why these two teams are usually head-to-head in the playoffs every year.
