The Cougars started the season 3-0 vs the Power House Panthers. In their last meeting, the Cougars fell to the Panthers in Overtime. This time the Panthers wanted 2 points without the extra minutes.
Skylar Diamond-Burchuk skated off the left boards and stick handled the puck in front of the Cougars net and back handed the puck behind Cougars starter Jonah Chambers at 3:26 of the first for a 1-0 lead for the Panthers early in the game. Assist going to Denver Maloney. At 8:25 on the power play the Cougars connected with Dylan Jessa feeding Evan Easton in the high slot. His shot was tipped past Panthers starter Connor McKillop tying the game at 1’s. A few minutes later it’s Jessa again feeding Easton with a stretch pass at the Panthers blueline and Easton made no mistake and buried the puck in the back of the net at 11:23. Second assist went to Matt Clark. The Panthers Luc Pelletier took a Denver Maloney pass and tipped it up to his backhand and into the back of the net. The goal was scored at 14:54 with the second assist going to Logan Speirs. Shots were 12-10 in favour of the Cougars after 1.
At 5:25 of the second and on the PP it was Drew Coughlin who was able to beat Chambers from in close with assists going to Josh Lingard and Riley Braun to give the Panthers the lead again. Then it was the Cougars back on the Power Play and Johnathon Esposito passed the puck to Bryce Irwin who carried the puck into the Panthers zone along the right boards. Irwin fed a beauty back pass to Easton who cruised into the high slot and ripped a wrist shot high glove side to again tie the game. That scoring play was at 17:32 of the second. Shots after 2 were 21-17 in favour of the Panthers.
The Cougars start off the third period on the PP with Riley Braun in the box for elbowing near the end of the second. It would be 3 for 3 on the PP for the Cougars and a third goal for Evan Easton after he took a rebound from a Bryce Irwin shot and buried it into the back of the net. The second assist was from Marshall Brown. That goal was scored at the :56 mark. Then it was the Panthers turn on the PP with Trey Anderson in the box for slashing it would be Tanner Wort who would pick up the rebound of a Josh Lingard point shot and tie the game yet again. The second assist went to Diamond-Burchuk. Then it was Esposito in the box for a rather weak tripping call and it was Riley Braun in the slot to take the lead back. Assists to Wort and Lingard. Late in the game Jude Wessel gets schooled and ends up in the box for interference. The Cougars killed off the penalty but allowed an empty net goal late to Logan Speirs with the assist to Denver Maloney and the final is 6-4 Panthers.
