Cougars Dominate Glacier Kings in Comox

The Cougars entered the G Kings barn with Comox on a high after winning two games in a row, their first two wins this year.

The first period saw the rink a little slanted towards the Comox net with the Cougars peppering Comox starter Zac Raesler with 17 shots while Noah Chambers only faced 5 in the Cougars net. The score after the first was 0-0.

The second opened up with the Cougars pressing early and Dawson Blanchette passed the puck up to Evan Easton who slid the puck to Marshall Brown. Brown gave it right back to Easton who took it down the wing, cut to the net and put a shot on Raesler. Raesler stopped Easton but Brown was trailing and lifted the puck over Raesler and into the net for the first goal of the game at :58 of the second. There was a faceoff in the Cougars zone a little later and the puck was in the feet of 4 players in the high slot and Jacob Murray of the Glacier Kings got his stick on the puck and wristed it past a surprised Chambers to tie the game. The goal was at 4:18 with the assist to Ryan Telford. Cougars went on the PP a little while later and were controlling in the Glacier Kings zone. Easton passed the puck to Bryce Irwin at the point, Irwin passed the puck and it went off Davis Franks skate right to Zack Guerra in front of the crease and Guerra made no mistake and gave the Cougars their 1 goal lead again at 6:07. There was no more scoring in the period and shots were 15 for the Cougars and 6 for the G Kings.

Around the 12:40 mark Jackson Egan was cutting across centre ice and was taken down with a very dangerous knee on knee hit that went undetected. This is just another example of why we need to have the 2 referee system. Egan played the rest of the game but time will tell what the lingering damage may be.

The third period was more of the same with the Cougars again dominating and using their Special Teams dominance to put this one away. The Cougars have the #1 Power Play as well as the #1 Penalty Kill in the league. There were lots of Cougars chances but no goals until the 15:10 mark when on the PP it was Spencer Golden who took a pass from Cameron Lesergent and rung it off the post. The puck bounced right back to him and he made no mistake on his second chance. The second assist went to Blanchette. At 18:49 Golden again finished off a nice pass from Hark Gill after Zack Guerra pushed the puck to Gill while on his way to the ice in a collision. The Cougars went 2 for 3 on the Power Play and a perfect 4 for 4 on the penalty kill.

Players of the game were Raesler for the G-Kings and Golden for the Cougars.

Next up for the Cougars are the Westshore Wolves at the Arch Thursday at 7pm.
