The Two Best, But A New Number 1.

The Panthers came into the game on Friday 2 points up on the Cougars. This was a big 4 point game for Victoria. The Cougars have been responsible for 2 of the Panthers 3 losses this year and hold 2 games in hand. This game looked to hold major South Division implications.

The first period saw a lot of rubber thrown at both tenders. But it was surprising to absolutely no one when Riley Braun opened the scoring in the opening frame. Braun leads the league in points, 37 at this point in the game. Jonah Chambers though, made several unreal saves to keep the score the way it was. Then with former Cougars Alex Benger in the box after taking an ill-advised penalty, Evan Easton tied the game in the final minute of the period.

The Panthers jumped out to a 2-1 lead only 12 seconds into the 2nd period. Benn-Wipp right off the opening draw, unassisted. A few minutes later Denver Maloney made it 3-1. This game looked like the Panthers were going to walk away with it, boy was that wrong.

Then a couple more minutes later, Colten Witter grabbed his first VIJHL goal with a wrister that fooled McKillop after it bounced off his blocker. Then on another Panthers penalty, Marshall Brown tied the game on a pretty tic-tac-toe play from Easton and Irwin. Brown snagged his second in a row and gave the Cougars a lead on a seeing eye shot, one that fooled everyone.

The Cougars seemed to control most of the play in the early parts of the 3rd period. A 5 on 3 power play helped the Cougars. Victoria managed to extend their lead with their third power play goal of the game. LeSergent pushed the Cougars to 3 for 3 on the PP at that point. The next 10 minutes or so saw the Cougars tighten up their defence making the Panthers struggle to get any offence going. Then on a 2 on 1 for the Cougars, Davis Frank, freshly back from injury, made it 6-3 with 3 minutes to go. That would do it for the Panthers. The Cougars drop the Panthers for the third time this year.

Cougars have a break before they take on the Islanders in KPI on November 23rd, 730pm puck drop.
