The Cougars have had Saanich’s number for a while. The last time Saanich beat Victoria was October 5th, 2018. That’s 2 in a row this year, and 8 in a row total. The Braves beat Victoria twice early last season, and not since.
The Braves have struggled early this year but have started to show signs of improvement. The Cougars can’t be complacent in this contest. Robert Michetti, the current VIJHL player of the week is the X factor in this game.
The first period didn’t see any scoring, and not much in the way of shots actually with only 10 total, but it was exciting. Both teams traded some solid hits. Dayton Clarke, the undisputed ‘big man’ of the VI laid a few Cougars out. But the biggest hitter was Zach Guerra who tossed 2 huge bombs.
The second period saw the Cougars pick up the offence with Evan Easton breaking the deadlock 4:43 into the game, finally solving Michetti. Two minutes later though the Braves got it back on a weird goal from Auchterlonie. The puck slide off his stick and fooled Anderson. The final period the Cougars started to click and threw a lot of rubber at Michetti. Zach Guerra grabbed a goal and Easton snagged his second of the night to put the Braves away. Michetti was the best player on the ice for both teams, despite the loss. He had 40 saves in the L.
It wasn’t a great game overall from the Cougars, but they managed to find a way to win. If they play the same against the Panthers Friday, things will go very different.
Robert Michetti and Zach Guerra were the players of the game.
