The Saanich Braves were without their top 2 D-men and possibly players overall in Evan Abgrall and Jake Wilhelm and were ripe for the taking.
It didn’t take the Cougars long to hit the score sheet. On the 1st shift the puck came out of the Braves zone to Colton Witter who passed the puck over to Bryce Irwin. Irwin took the puck into the Braves zone and found Zack Guerra at the point. Guerra took a heavy wrist shot on net and the rebound came right to Cameron Lesergent who made no mistake and beat Braves starting netminder Robert Michetti at :42 seconds.
At 12:34 Davis Frank and Irwin teamed up with Frank taking the puck into the slot and made a great back pass to Irwin who hit the empty net for a 2-0 Cougars lead. The Cougars outshot the Braves 13-1 in the 1st.
The 2nd period was the Desmond Arthurs show. There were 3 goals scored and all 3 came off the stick of Arthurs. Around the 5 minute mark Evan Easton took the puck into the Braves zone and Marshall Brown took a pass to the net and had his stick lifted but Arthurs was right there to slide the puck past Michetti at 5:18. Then at 17:28 Brown steals the puck in the Braves zone and found Arthurs at the high slot and Desmond buried it short side. Finally at 19:44 on the power play it was Hark Gill taking a high point shot that Lesergent picked up and shovelled in front to Arthurs who buried it for the natural Hat Trick! Shots after 2 were 23-9 in favour of the Cougars.
In the 3rd there were 7 goals. 5 for the Cougars and 2 for the Braves.
The Braves also switched goalies putting Connor Svienson in the net.
At 3:11 Ryan Strange passed to Dayton Clarke made a beautiful back pass from behind the net to Kyle Brown in the slot and he one timed the pass for the first Braves goal. Then with Strange in the box for a trip it was Spencer Golden feeding the puck to Irwin on the point and then down to Brown on the half boards. He walked into the high slot and found the top corner. At 10:03 Graeme Getty got the 2nd Braves goal in front as David Edgar fed Jack Groves in front. Cougars goalie Brett Anderson made the save but Getty flipped the puck into the top corner.
With the teams playing 4 on 4 Arthurs passed the puck to Evan Easton in his own zone. Easton took the puck all the way down around the Braves net for a wrap around and Jonathon Esposito finished it off. At 12:53 and playing short handed Jude Wessel made a great back handed clear that Irwin was able to catch up to and cut in front of Svienson and went 5 hole for a shortie. At 13:17 Trey Anderson picked up the puck from Nick Dumonceaux and went down and made it 9-2. The scoring was finished off at 14:51 on the PP when Esposito passed to Dylan Jessa on the point. Jessa went to Frank in the high slot and Frank buried a backhander. Final 10-2 Cougars.
