G Kings Enter The Arch

The Cougars entered the game on a 4 game winning streak, and the Glacier Kings entered the game having not won a game in 2019. In fact they haven’t won a game in 293 days, December 14th 2018, a 6-3 win over the Storm. A game that saw Davis Frank, then a Storm player, take home Player-of-the-Game for Campbell River.

The opening frame started as could have been predicted, all Cougars. Victoria held the offensive play for 80% or more of the opening 20. Victoria Hammered 22 shots on net. Brandon Naidu though, stood strong for the Kings. He made several outstanding saves in the first 10 minutes. The onslaught continued though, and Brown finally got one past the netminder. 15:06 of the first Brown snagged his 4th of the year. Victoria didn’t stop, at 16:41 Frank grabbed his 6th on the year, then 3 minutes later Brown got another, on the Power Play.

The 2nd period was a completely different story. The Cougars came out flat and lifeless. Terrible passes easily intercepted, running around their own zone like Tim-Bits players and a general sense of disorder. Comox made them pay for it. Two unanswered goals by Roberts and Neufeld had the boys from Comox back in the game, down only 1, mid-way through the game, and the momentum. Unfortunately for the Glacier Kings, the Cougars offence is very, very good. Even with a period of team-defence struggling, the front line was playing well. The Cougars took back that momentum shift late in the period on Spencer Golden’s third of the year at 13:01. Comox also gave up a Too-Many-Men penalty late, giving the Cougars a power play going into the final frame.

Victoria looked more like period 1, than period 2, in the 3rd. That was good for them, bad for Comox. The domination of play continued for Victoria. Naidu still managed to frustrate the Cougars offence, though. One player that stood out for the Cougars was Trey Anderson. The 16 year old forward was a force for the Cougars. Brody Coulter said in his post-game that he walks a line, right where they want him. Hard hitting, gritty play. He was rewarded in his play. Anderson bagged his 2nd junior goal and the 5-2 lead. That’s where this one ended. Comox still winless, but they didn’t give up. It won’t be long before that 0 is erased I think.
