Pirates Invade The Arch

The Nanaimo Buccaneers ventured South for their bout with the Cougars so far this year. The Cougars were fresh off a crazy come-back win over league best Peninsula Panthers. Jonah Chambers also made his Cougars debut in net.

Much like the Peninsula game, it was all Cougars early. Austin Dendl was forced to make 3 unreal saves. He was easily the player of the game only 10 minutes into game. But with the Cougars short-handed on a Jack Hanarahan minor, Zach Guerra went two-on-one with Spencer Golden. Guerra kept the puck and went up high, complete with water bottle bouncing off the net, his 4th of the year. A few minutes later though, Dylan Tonks collected his league best 8th goal after being left alone out-front. Dylan Devers made it 2-1 when a scramble in the crease left him a gift with no goalie to get in the way.

The middle frame was just as exciting as the first. The Cougars trailing 2-1 shifted the momentum quickly. Marshall Brown managed to tie the game after getting robbed a few times in the game versus Peninsula on Friday. His third goal of the year tied the game and got the Cougars right back into the game. About two and a half minutes later the Cougars took the lead, Jackson Egan with his first as a Cougar and it was a 3-2 Cougars lead. Colten Witter was having a monster game to this point as well. A few booming checks and two points. The 20 year old D-man is making his presence felt. Penalties were becoming a bit of an issue for the Cougars though. The aforementioned Witter was sent off the ice for a 2 and 10 head check penalty. Just as that penalty was expiring Coghlan buried a loose puck along side the net with Chambers down-and-out with no chance to make a save. The 2nd ended with the game tied at 3.

The third continued the momentum. The Cougars gave the Bucs every possible chance to take this game away too. The Cougars were down 5 on 3, twice. Both times Nanaimo hammered the net with scoring chance, after scoring chance. Chambers stopped every shot. Finally the Cougars were able to shift the game in their favour. After 4 straight penalties for the home team, the Bucs took their only minor of the period. With Coghlan in the box for Slashing, Bryce Irwin grabbed his first of the year. Only a minute later the Cougars put the final nail in the coffin for the Bucs, Esposito collected his 2nd of the season and the Cougars lead 5-3. That’s were the game would end.

Players of the game were Bryce Irwin and Austin Dendl. Nanaimo out-shot Victoria 41-30.

Next up is Comox on Thursday, 7pm at the Arch.
