Cougars Play Spoiler at Wolves Home Opener

With the Mann Cup going on the Westshore Wolves had to play their home opener at the Juan de Fuca Arena just up the hill. This meant no Hockey TV as well so a lot of people missed an entertaining game.

The Cougars came out flying in the 1st, dominating play and possession time. Five different scorers. First it was Davis Frank on the PP from Marshall Brown and one of the new guys Evan Easton. Easton’s rights were acquired from the Kerry Park Islanders in the summer after Easton committed to playing at Notre Dame in Wilcox, Sask. That didn’t work out so Easton suited up as a Cougar and looked pretty darn good.

Other goals in the period came from Harkirat Gill (unassisted), Easton from Brown and Colten Witter, Matt Clark from Nicolas Dumonceaux and finally Zach Guerra (unassisted). The Cougars out shot the Wolves 20-8. It looked like the Cougars were going to dominate this one but the Wolves had other ideas.

In the first 31 seconds of the 2nd the Wolves would strike twice. First Kahlil Fontana from Johnny Houlding, then Houlding from Fontana making it 5-2. The Wolves didn’t stop there. At 4:26 with the Cougars on the PP it was Chase Klassen who would send Blake Bentham away for a short-handed marker. The Cougars would answer later on the PP when Brown would feed the puck back to another newcomer Johnathon Esposito who would put a point shot on net for Cameron LeSergent to put into the back of the net making it 6-3. After that the teams traded goals back and forth with the Wolves capping it off to make it an 8-6 score at the end of the second.

In the third the Cougars settled down a bit and it was Frank who opened the scoring who would score the eventual game winner at 7:10 (unassisted). The Wolves got a PP goal at 9:16 to pull to within 2 again and with 1:17 remaining Houlding would send Fontana in to make it 9-8. An exciting scramble in the last minute as the Wolves tried for the equalizer but the Cougars held on.

After this game both teams defensive coaches have some work to do. That said it was a very exciting game to attend.
