Sikkes Shines in Penalty Filled Win

Owen Sikkes stopped 37 of 39 shots to backstop the Cougars to a win in last night’s game up in Nanaimo.

The game started off with technical difficulties on their internet broadcast and didn’t correct until the game was tied 1-1. At 8:57 of the first the Cougars would draw first blood with Marshall Brown scoring from Mateo Albinati and Cameron LeSergent. The Bucs would even the score on the PP at 12:40 when Brendan Rogers scored from Riley Gannon and Dylan Hartl.

The score would remain tied until the last minute of the first when on the Booker Chacalias took a Tyler Vanuden pass and undressed the D-man and fired the puck high glove side just inside the post. That was at 19:22. Just 24 seconds later Josh Martin ripped a point shot in on a screened Spencer Deacon to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead on what turned out to be the Game Winning Goal. Deacon was replaced by Blake Woods for the balance of the game.

Early in the second on the PP Billy Walters copied Martin with a screened point shot that found the back of the net. There was no more scoring until the Third when the Cougars scored 2 more goals on the PP. At 1:45 it was Jaden McNulty and then at 4:18 it was Tyler Vanuden’s turn on a breakaway.

This was an ugly game when it came to penalties. Looking at the game summary the Cougars took 88 minutes in penalties to the Bucs 96. There was a late penalty to one of the Bucs players which was missed as the Cougars had a 9 minute powerplay to end the game so add 19 minutes to the Bucs total and the game had 203 minutes in penalties. Ugly game but a good win for the boys.

Game stars were Billy Walters for Nanaimo and Jaden McNulty for the Cougars.

Note: A total of 11 games worth of suspensions were handed out to Nanaimo players, including 9 to Braydon Nelson who left the bench to engage in a fight.
