It was Victoria Minor Hockey Night at the Arch Thursday and the Cougars didn’t disappoint the Minor Hockey players in attendance by beating the visiting Comox Glacier Kings 4-1.
Both teams looked pretty tentative in the start of the first period. The Cougars took the lead at 13:07 of the first on a goal from league leader Mateo Albinati, assisted by Ryan Okino and Marshall Brown. Play went back and forth until 14:25 when Finn Withey took a feed from Jerzy Gus in the slot and scored top shelf on Cougars starter Owen Sikkes. Sikkes just joined the Cougars from the Beaver Valley NIghthawks and was playing his first game as a Cougar. After that goal the Cougars took over and dominated until19:30 when Matt Clark out waited Comox starter Matthias Smith to take the lead for the Cougars. The Glacier Kings poured on the pressure for the final 30 seconds to no avail.
In the intermission the Cougars all signed autographs for the numerous Minor Hockey players in attendance and I don’t know what the kids said but the Cougars came out flying in the 2nd.
The Cougars got second period goals at 11:28 from Jack Hanrahan with a point shot that went off the top of Smiths glove and in from Nathan Ingram and Brown and then at 18:11 Brown made a nice deke to beat Smith from Bryce Irwin and Nathan Ingram. In the third the Glacier Kings pushed back but Sikkes held them off the score sheet. Shots were 47-21 in favour of the Cougars.
The Cougars had a 2nd and a 3rd period goal disallowed. The 3rd period goal much to the chagrin of Tyler Vanuden who was playing his first game back with the Cougars after a long stint with the Port Alberni Bulldogs of the BCHL. Vanuden was buzzing all night only to be denied. We all know that Tyler won’t be held off the score sheet for long.
Game stars were Matthias Smith for Comox and Marshall Brown for the Cougars
Next game is at home tomorrow night back at the Arch against the visiting Kerry Park Islanders. Puck drop is 7 pm.
