The Victoria Cougars continue to reload as they make a bid to reclaim the top spot in the VIJHL. The Cougars have acquired 20-year-old Kevan McBean from the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in exchange for Matt Sparrow.
Kevan, a Calgary native, spent the past two seasons with Beaver Valley, which peaked with a Cyclone Taylor Cup in his rookie season. The 6-foot 185lbs defenceman will add an offensive punch to the backend.
“This is a good pick up for us,” said Head Coach Suneil Karod. “Kevan is a very skilled and intelligent hockey player who has BCHL experience and has won the Cyclone Taylor Cup. He will make our D-core stronger and I know he will help us out with his leadership and offensive ability”
The Victoria Cougars would like to wish Matt Sparrow luck in his hockey future.
McBean amassed 31 points (10 goals 21 assists) in 32 games with Beaver Valley Last year (including playoffs). Kevan took charge throughout the playoffs last season to the tune of 1.4 PPG as a dman leading all players on his team.
This acquisition builds a solid and offensively minded defence for the Cougars.
“I think we have a great mix of defenders and skaters on the backend. We’ll have a few shutdown guys and a few point guys, but all of our dmen will be able to advance the puck either through skating or skill.”
The Cougars coaching staff have kept busy this summer reloading and will continue to do so as they are still looking to fill in spots.
The Victoria Cougars main camp will take place August 17-19 at Westhills.
