COUGARS CONTINUE TO STRUGGLE

SAANICH, B.C. – Riley Mathieson made 31 saves and Michael Sproule chipped in with four assists to lead the Saanich Braves past the Victoria Cougars 5-1 on Friday night.

Scoring for the Braves were Dale McCabe (2), James Vince, Trevor Owens, and Gavin Grewal.

Saanich led 2-0 after one period and 4-1 after two.

Mateo Albinati scored the lone goal for the Cougars whose losing streak was extended to three games.

Getting the start in net for Victoria was Connor McKillop who faced 29 shots and allowed four goals.  Patrick Ostermann turned aside nine of ten shots in relief.

The Cougars special teams faltered again.

Not only did it go 0-for-5 on the power play, Victoria extended its scoreless streak with the man advantage to three games and 18 unsuccessful attempts, it allowed Saanich to score four times on eight power play opportunities.

The Cougars drop to 3-3-0-0 on the season.

Elsewhere in the VIJHL, Ryan Butler notched his league-leading sixth, seventh, and eighth goals of the season as the Campbell River Storm cruised to a 7-1 win over the Kerry Park Islanders in front of 884 at the Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

Next game for Victoria is Thursday, October 5 against the Saanich Braves.  Game time at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, located at 1151 Esquimalt Road, is 7:00 p.m.
