Suneil Karod has been named Head Coach Island Under-17 team for the BC Cup.
“It’s always a great feeling to be named to a Best Ever team,” the Victoria Cougars’ assistant coach said. “I’m looking forward to coaching new players and some of the players I coached in Moose Jaw.”
And some of those players Karod got to coach at this year’s Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup were Ryan Gropp (Seattle Thunderbirds), Joe Hicketts (Victoria Royals), and Jake Virtanen (Calgary Hitmen).
All three players were chosen in the first round of the 2011 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.
According to Karod, he skipped the assistant coach level and went straight to being the head coach. That does not often happen as Hockey BC wants coaches to go from a being a U16 assistant coach to a U16 head coach before becoming a U17 assistant coach and then a U17 head coach.
Not bad for Karod who credits the Cougars’ organization for helping improve his coaching skills.
“Obviously coaching with the Cougars has helped me improve on my coaching skills which helps me at the U17 level and being at the high performance camps,” Karod said.
Karod also went on to say that this will also allow him to talk and work with different coaches and learn different coaching philosophies which will help him become a better coach overall.
The BC Cup takes place every year in mid-May.
